A Boston-based singer of “traditional” R&B, Barrence Whitfield is the owner of one incredible pair of lungs and limitless energy and enthusiasm for his music.

Barrence Whitfield, alias Barry White, started singing in a Gospel church as a young child. Throughout his high school years, he belonged to bands as both a singer and a drummer. Initially, he molded himself after Little Richard and James Brown, although he has many role models and admires such greats as Duke Ellington, Slim Gallard, Thelonious Monk, the Funkadelics, and Raymond Scott. But the sound he has crafted over two decades of performing is unquestionably his own.

July 9 - FREE! - MA Air Natl Guard Band

The Air National Guard Band of the Northeast is a thirty-five member unit attached to Massachusetts State Headquarters. We are supported by the 104th Fighter Wing at Barnes Air National Guard Base but physically located at Massachusetts National Guard Headquarters in Milford, MA.

The mission of the band is to support Air Force recruiting, public relations and direct support to the units of the Massachusetts Air National Guard and all Air National Guard units in New England and New York.

The band performs an average of forty engagements a year. These performances include parades, military balls, radio broadcasts, summer park concerts, television specials, formal evening concerts and military ceremonies. The band is seen and heard by over a million and a half people yearly.

This is a FREE concert! Please bring your friends and family, and enjoy the rousing music presented by these talented performers.

July 10 - The New Black Eagles Jazz Band

The Black Eagles, as they are often known to their fans, have been a fixture on the international jazz scene since 1971, bringing the sounds of traditional New Orleans Jazz to audiences all over the world. Many observers regard them as the premier band playing in the traditional jazz style; as such, the band members regard themselves as the “Keepers of the Flame”!

The Black Eagles refuse to slavishly copy earlier jazz performances note for note. At all times, they are aware of the legacy and influence from such legendary New Orleans musicians as Louis Armstrong, George Lewis, Kid Ory, Sidney Bechet, Jelly Roll Morton, Paul Barbarin and, of course, The Preservation Hall Jazz Band, just to name a few of those who represent the best in the history of New Orleans Jazz. They also have a good selection of Duke Ellington and Ragtime to spice the pot.

Now in their 37th year, the band today is playing at its very best.

July 11 - The Dave Rowe Trio

The Dave Rowe Trio presents a fresh take on the folk scene with powerful three-part harmonies, instrumental virtuosity, exciting showmanship, and keen songwriting. They respectfully build on tradition to move the music into a new groove. Dave Rowe has a strong heritage to draw on, having grown up immersed in music. His father was Tom Rowe, Schooner Fare’s bass player, whose driving rhythms laid the foundation for that group’s robust sound.

This unique group uses Steinberger solid body instruments instead of acoustic instruments in the playing of traditional folk, Celtic, Bluegrass, and original music. The Steinberger instruments optimize the acoustic sound for the electronic age with true close-your-eyes-and-it’s-acoustic tone. Music had always been a passion for Dave; now he is continuing and expanding on a legacy so well begun.

Great country music returns to Maudslay with The Don Campbell Band.

Named Maine’s Best Singer-Songwriter for the last five years in the 2004-2008 Maine Sunday Telegram Readers’ Poll, Don and the Band are frequent performers on stages around the country and have opened for acts including American Idol winner Carrie Underwood, Willie Nelson, Keith Urban, Ricky Skaggs, Toby Keith, Gretchen Wilson, Merle Haggard, and more.

Don Campbell performs over 150 shows per year, co-based out of Portland, Maine, and Nashville, TN. His recently released CD American Garage captures a nostalgic slice of Americana in 11 original tunes and 2 covers.

American Garage is full of lush imagery that’s made all the more vivid by Campbell’s buttery-smooth tenor. His upper range has an underlying deep timbre that allows him to effortlessly dip in to the bass range, giving a rich versatility to his crooner-like vocals…. July 18 - Black Sea Salsa (new!)

Black Sea Salsa is a 15-piece World-Music group made up of 6 horns, 4 vocalists, and 5 rhythm, playing an original blend of Armenian music and Afro-Cuban Jazz. Led by trumpeter Dan Teager, who writes and arranges the band’s repertoire, Black Sea Salsa has established itself as one of Boston’s premier festival bands, playing for venues such as Sail Boston 2000, Marblehead Arts Festival, Norwood Summerfest, and the Boston Arts Festival. In addition, the group has been officially recognized by the Massachusetts Arts Council, which awarded Black Sea Salsa a grant to perform a series of outdoor concerts in Belmont and Watertown.

July 24 - Lance Bryant Quintet (new!)

Lance Bryant, who also composes and arranges, comes out of Markham, Illinois, a small town near Chicago. He received his formal music education at Berklee College of Music in Boston, MA, where he studied saxophone and, composition and arranging. Lance fostered musical relationships with fellow classmates, saxophonists Branford Marsalis and Greg Osby, drummer Marvin “Smitty” Smith, trumpeter Wallace Roney, pianist Cyrus Chestnut and other renowned musicians. After moving to New York City in the mid. 1980s, Lance continued his education, studying saxophone and arranging privately with Frank Foster, the former director of the Count Basie Orchestra. He also studied composition with Bruce Adolphe of Lincoln Center’s Chamber Music Society.
Throughout his music career, Lance’s talents as an arranger, composer, saxophonist or vocalist have been featured on many projects like: For the Love of Jazz on Mojazz Records (Lionel Hampton) on which he arranged a song for the late Tito Puente; Swingin’ Live, Buddha Boogie and Settin’ The Pace, featuring the music of Frank Foster, on Swing46 Records for band leader George Gee; and Dem Bones and Simply Natural on MaxJazz Records for Carla Cook.

The Walker Creek Band has been entertaining crowds for almost 30 years. The band has many musical influences that are seen on a given night and loves to spread around lead vocals duties and enjoys music that involves harmonies. The Band, Bob Dylan, Dire Straits, Tom Petty, Bruce Cockburn, Van Morrison, Moody Blues, Beatles, Delbert McClinton, Springsteen, Eric Clapton as well as Little Feat and Stevie Ray Vaughn are just a few of the artists represented in the set list. Ever-popular jazz vocalist, pianist, and Brownstore recording artist, Paul Broadnax comes to Maudslay this August to perform a special concert of standards with his wonderful ensemble.

Known for his “King Thing” (Nat Cole’s singing and playing), and the powerful influence of Joe Williams, Paul has appeared with many nationally recognized jazz artists including such notables as Clark Terry, Joe Williams, Milt Hinton and Dorothy Donegan, Alan Dawson, Lionel Hampton, Cab Calloway, Jimmy Witherspoon, Diane Carrol, Donna Byrne and Rebecca Parris. He continues to perform around New England and beyond with various artists. For this performance at MAC, he will be joined by saxman Fred Haas and one of Newburyport’s favorite sons, drummer Les Harris, Jr.

Twice nominated for the Boston Music Awards Jazz Singer of the Year, and chosen in 2003 as Musician of the Year by the Boston Musicians’ Association, Broadnax is a musical legend in our own time.

Aside from a magnificent pianist and accompanist, Paul is a gentleman, a credit to the profession, and a major force in the perpetuation of the craft of jazz. Those who appreciate talent will wonder where he’s been. - Clark Terry

Aug. 8 - Occidental Gypsy Jazz Quartet

Their well rehearsed and lightning fast swing brings the Parisian jazz manouche of the 1930s alive and the audience to its feet. The musical genre has undergone a tremendous resurgence in popularity for its sophisticated yet sentimental sound and swinging precise rhythm, often light hearted and whimsical, sometimes aching with melancholy. It was guitarist Jean Baptiste “Django” Reinhardt and violinist Stephane Grappelli along with their Quintet of the Hot Club of France who eventually codified this fusion of swing, American jazz and manouche (traditional gypsy music).

The OCGJQ’s rapport with a crowd has an immediacy and warmth that has everyone smiling, dancing, and clapping out the rhythm, transporting the room to the cafes of Paris in the thirties. eir music attracts a broad range of ages, as it satisfies both intellect and heart. Serious musicians and aficionados are stunned by the level of musicianship, but most just soak up the joie de vivre and dance.
